Completion of the works of the Bellinzona-Lugano viaduct - Ceneri Base Tunnel Tranche 782
construction of the first of the two viaducts planned at the north portal of the Ceneri Base Tunnel at Camorino was completed on time. New Transalpine Railway trains will head south over this structure.
The shorter of the two viaducts was opened on the evening of Thursday, 11th December 2014, in the presence of employees of AlpTransit Gotthard SA, the workers engaged in the construction work, as well as design engineers and the local site management.
The construction was carried out by the Consortium of Ticino companies Matteo Muttoni SA (Bellinzona), Pizzarotti SA (Bellinzona) and CSC SA (Lugano).
As this occurred during the Christmas period, and thanks to the architectural and engineering significance of the work, the structure was spectacularly lit and will remain so for the duration of the holidays. Thus emphasizing its centrality and impact on the landscape and offering a festive symbol to those engaged in the work and to the population.
The next goal of AlpTransit Gotthard AG, at the Camorino Node site, will be the completion of the second Lugano - Bellinzona Viaduct, scheduled for the end of the year 2015.
Once the aforementioned civil engineering works are completed, installation of the railway infrastructure including tracks and overhead wires will begin on both viaducts, in time for the planned commissioning of the Ceneri Base Tunnel at the end of 2019.
